As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, the urge for a road trip tends to get a bit stronger. But what if you only have the weekend? That’s not long enough time to travel cross-country for your own National Lampoon style vacation. Well, why not keep it right here in good ol’ Upstate New York? Check out these seven places along scenic Route 20 where you can get the gears moving, site-see and make some memories along the way.
- Albany, NY- Not only is it the state capitol, it’s the only major city on the trip and it is the hub of all political and social activity for the area. If you’re into history, stop by the State Museum, if you’re interested in locally brewed hard cider try out Nine Pins Cider Works and if you need a bite to eat, you have to see the menu at DP Brasserie.
- Sharon Springs, NY– If you need a day of R&R this is where you want to be! A former resort town that is being reborn with tons of unique restaurants, festivals, and a luxurious spa.
- The TePee– This is the perfect place for a pit stop. It has plenty of cheesy decorations (bison statue included) and classic road food at The Chuckwagon. Take a moment to stretch your legs and take in views of the Mohawk River you can’t get anywhere else.
- Glimmerglass– Celebrating over 40 years, Glimmerglass is an opera house that’s a “can’t miss”. Nestled on the shores of Otsego Lake just north of Cooperstown, you won’t want to forget your camera on this stop.
- Petrified Creature Museum of Natural History– Yes, this sounds a little weird. But, who doesn’t want to play archeologist for a day and get a picture with a dinosaur? Exactly.
- Jewett’s Cheese House– If you love cheese, or even if you just love someone who loves cheese, this place is a must. With over 400 items to choose from, including 20-year aged cheddar, you’re bound to find something everyone likes.
- Cazenovia, NY– You’ve just made it to the picturesque town smack dab in the middle of New York. Take in the history through a number of events that occur throughout the year at the Lorenzo State Historic Site, take a dip in Cazenovia Lake, and travel on the Cazenovia Beverage Trail to experience home crafted wines, hard ciders, and beers.
Check back in a couple of weeks, we’ll give you seven more places to check out!
