In a class by itself, the new 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has more than 20,000 reasons to offer drivers to take this vehicle home with them. That’s because the Outlander’s competitors all cost about $20,000 more than this nifty CUV plug-in.

  • Forbes: “If they [buyers] get a chance to see and drive the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the company’s prospects will be very bright.

The Outlander PHEV is a plug-in, hybrid, electrical vehicle. Right now, there are few entrants into this emergent category. All but the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV are luxury-type vehicles with names longer than the cords used to plug them into an electrical outlet. However, the fuel economy of the Outlander PHEV is projected to be better than its toney rivals.

The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a game changer. Especially if you need utility but want fuel savings too. You don’t need two different vehicles: one to haul your stuff and the other you drive most of the time to save on fuel costs. The Outlander PHEV can do both.

Mitsubishi reports that the Outlander PHEV is the best-selling Plug-in SUV in the world right now. The system itself is very straightforward, as these things go. A 12kWh lithium-ion battery pack is mounted at the bottom of the CUV, powering twin electric motors (one front/one rear). A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine lives under the hood. Depending on the drive mode, the gasoline engine acts as either a generator or an engine, sending power to the front wheels. The combined system horsepower is estimated at 197.

The PHEV comes with plenty of safety and driver assistance systems onboard, including standard advanced seven air bag SRS system with driver’s side knee air bag; anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA); Active Stability Control (ASC); Traction Control Logic (TCL); Hill Start Assist (HSA); Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS); Blind Spot Warning (BSW) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Lane Change Assist (LCA). It can also be fitted with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic High Beam (AHB) headlights, Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has two trim levels: SEL, and GT. All Outlanders will carry a fully transferable 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty, a 10-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, a 10-year/100,000-mile PHEV components and main drive battery warranty, a 7-year/100,000-mile anti-corrosion limited warranty and 5-year/unlimited roadside assistance. Federal and state tax credits will apply for most buyers, currently at least $5,836 (based on battery size).
